By: Secretariat

Speakers: H.E. Amb. Christian Wenaweser, Permanent Representative, Permanent Mission of the Principality of Liechtenstein to the United Nations, Ms. Hazel Feigenblatt, Independent Anti-Corruption Expert, Ms. Anga Timilsina, Global Programme Advisor on Anti-Corruption, UNDP, Ms. Silvina Rivarola, Programm Manager, Egmont Centre of Excellence and Leadership, and Mr. Daniel Thelesklaf, Head of Secretariat, Liechtenstein Initiative for Finance Against Slavery and Trafficking (FAST).

There is a considerable body of evidence that shows that corruption (and money laundering) enables illegal trade. As such, taking an anti-corruption approach to tackling illegal trade is increasingly acknowledged as being meaningful in the fight against such crimes. However, little attention has been paid to exploring the link between corruption and modern slavery. According to a forthcoming UNDP study, corruption is a facilitator of exploitation that leads some of the world’s most vulnerable populations into modern slavery. Speakers at this event highlighted the links between corruption and modern slavery, discussing the challenges associated with addressing this phenomenon, and the role that the financial sector has in addressing these issues.
